Sorry, it took me so long to respond. I polled the Craft cousin’s and none of us seem to remember any in our research but we’ll keep looking. Sorry we couldn’t be more help.
April 8, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Thank you for responding. If anyone can tell me more about this branch-I would be thrilled.
April 8, 2009 at 6:37 pm
I can get you whatever you need. We have pictures of all the headstones and several of the family. Just let me know. The Craft lineage is fairly documented. Several of us maintain our work at Ancestry and I have a copy of the original notes. But many corrections have been made online.
Thanks for your comments and WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!!!!!

I am in this line. Anyone have any idea where James (Archelous father) was from. I have heard conflicting accounts of German and English Ancestory? Any ideas which?
June 12, 2009 at 11:03 pm
On my tree I have James Craft B: 1714, Wilkes, North Carolina, USA D: 1793, Wilkes, North Carolina, USA
son of Henry Craft 1700 England & unknown wife. This info was via cousins that work on them for me. But I don’t believe it’s accurate because his dad Samuel Crofts 1667- 1709 was born and died in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA as was his father before and his before him but now when you get to Griffin Craft and Dorcus Ruggles generation *Griffin Craft Born:
21 May 1600
Hereford, Yorkshire, , England
died 4 Oct 1689
Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA
But you can never rule it out because of people traveling and the fact that babies come, when babies are ready to come and not when they are supposed to. It’s a baby law. LOL We all need to do some more work on Henry Craft. Get his wife’s info and death information just knowing who he was isn’t enough. On my tree with the info I have all wives families and came through Mass from England. You’ll have to take this up with the “Craft” cousins and boy you better tread lightly. LOL They all claim England and I’ve never heard it any other way. But if you can come up with some other documentation; we’ll run it up the flag pole and see if she flies. Thanks for your comment and welcome to the family.

I am seeking any “proof” of parentage to my 3rd gr.grandmother, Mahala W. Craft, b. abt 1818, KY, to James W. & Drucilla Hammons Craft. ANYTHING that lists her with them would suffice! Help would be GREATLY appreciated!
July 27, 2009 at 11:30 am
I’m checking my notes:
meanwhile here is a nice link to another site with info on them” http://yeahpot.com/crase/jamescraft1790.html

CRAFT, Jno HAGINS, Susanna 02-AUG-1818
CRAFS, Peter DAVIS, Mary 19-FEB-1832
not helpful but needed info.
July 27, 2009 at 11:53 am
James Washington Craft married Drusilla Craft and had 8 known children plus three that people tie to them somehow. But Mahala died in Indiana so you will need to get her death certificate from that state – cemetery records – obits for the newspaper at that time. You’ll have to make the trip to there.
Although, I have to be honest, I’m not sure how she ended up there. Since Campbell Camel Crase died around 1893 in Kentucky after she is reported died in 1889 in Indiana. He was born in Floyd [normal for that year] married in Perry in 1834, moved to Pike by 1850, on to Magoffin 1860 & 1870, and died around 1893 presumably in Magoffin. So how she died in Indiana is up for debate. But the family reports that so we can’t rule it out. Someone named Denise Newman Stapleton added a few pictures of them to Ancestry you might like a copy of, if you don’t already have them. She also has Drusilla listed as Drucilla daughter of Archy. So you’ll need to take that up with her.
Thanks for your comment,

Sheila, thank you very much for your time and response to my query. I apologize for taking so long to get back to this site! I have seen several postings listing Drucilla as having died in Indiana; just not convinced. In addition to the dates you mentioned, I also find her, with Campbell, in the Magoffin Co’s 1880 Census. I REALLY need to find her documented SOMEPLACE with James W. & Drucilla Craft to prove parentage, but this is not coming to fruition. Thanks again for your site, and your information….elizabeth

My great grandfather was Marion Craft, son of Henry Craft and, I believe, Elizabeth (Dillan) Craft. I would like to learn more about the family. My dad, Raymond Ardell Craft was born in Seco, KY. His mom (Ivol (Blair) Craft) and dad (Martin Craft) are buried in the Sergent Blair cemetary in Whitesburg. We are interested in any information that may be available. My daughter is beginning to assemble the family tree. Please email as you have time.

Dear Peggy,
Most of the work on this generation is complete about 99% I’d say. I have pix of his tombstone at Ancestry. It actually sits about 100 feet from his grave. They were submitted by a cousin with all the information as to where it sits and why. Its really nice.
What or whom did you want to know about? I’ll try to get it for you.
Thanks for your comment and Welcome to the Family,

I have been looking for a William Craft from Magoffin KY who married/or had a child with a Elizabeth McDaniel. I suspect that they were not married since their child, Arthur McDaniel had his mother’s maiden name. I keep running into a wall with him.
Arthur was born in 1849, one document shows Elizabeth & William being married in 1845. Family documents say he was from Magoffin. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated to solve this clue.
Thanks
November 4, 2010 at 8:24 am
Dear Terena McDaniel,
From what I’ve seen, this is one messed up tree, no wonder you’re confused. In 1860 they have Arthur McDaniel living with his Brother & Mother and I’m guessing a Sally McDaniel Grandmother???
But then Elizabeth McDaniel is supposed to be married to and living with a Carpenter, with children. So, I’m not ruling it all out, but it just seems a little far fetched to me. Someone has melded to the two families.
I would suggest that you ignore what you think you know about them, and go with the FACTS. See where that takes you.
Check on the 1860 Brother Elijah McDaniel born 1843 in Breathitt. I checked in 1850 Breathitt, there is a Arthur McDonald (looks like McDanold) married to Polly with a son Elijah 5 and baby boy John 3 months old. Probably mother Sarah (probably Sally) born abt 1800 VA.
The only Wm Craft family living in Breathitt in 1850 was William & Rhoda, a mistake was made and they were listed in two counties one without Arzela, but it is the same family, census takers back then, weren’t without a margin of err. Believe me.
Archelous (my line) Craft family were in Letcher, KY at that time. Brief history lesson here: Magoffin didn’t exist in 1850 it was Salyerstown and they registered for the census in Floyd. (No William there, sorry)
I’m thinking, that maybe Elizabeth married into this family or was the sister of Arthur McDaniel. That’s a safe place to start.
Sorry, I couldn’t have been more help. Maybe someone else has a better time-line than I do. But, don’t give up. There are always look a like families, but you’ll eventually find who your looking for. Keep the faith.
Best wishes and Welcome to the family,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

My gg-grandmother was Margaret Frances Craft b 1817 Mississippi Territory (now state of AL) & her parents were Archelaus & Elizabeth Craft who came on to Mississippi & on the 1830 census. We know an Archelaus was in the early AL area as well as HIS brother Ezekiel which is documented in AL history. We have no further record of Archelaus (is this when he returned to KY? But OUR Elizabeth remained in MS with her youngest daughter who married Isaiah Sykes in 1834 Madison Co MS & is on every census record through 1870. Does anyone have other PROOF of death of Elizabeth Adams Craft OR who the Archelaus Craft in AL is? Any help with this will be appreciated! THANKS!

Dear Dana,
I know the lineage. I also know how frustrating it is to have a “unknown” at the top of the list. I have a few brick walls in my line as well.

I am trying to prove that Charity Craft and Archelous Craft are brother and sister. Do you have any documentation that this is so?
December 16, 2010 at 10:28 am
Hello, I’ve been doing research for a friend on the Craft family. DNA says 1st Craft in this country is James Craft, came to this country in 1682. Next is son John Craft, died 1760 in NC, left will: sons – James, Samuel &Thomas; James supposedly m Sarah Hammond (no proof); they had Archelous b 1749 Roaring River according to his pension

Shelia
about a year ago you responded to my post but I must have missed it.
Do I understand it to say Henry Craft (archelos gf) was a son of Samuel craft and descendent of griffin craft from mass?
I would love to have any details you have on the ancestors of Archelous. All I have ever found in the Internet stops at his father James and gf Henry. If the north Carolina crafts tie into the mass bunch would like that info. Thanks so much.

i am seeking info on my grd.father Noah Washington Craft.i believe he was related to Archelaous.he was from lechtor kty.
January 13, 2011 at 12:06 am
Dear Tim,
I was trying to find a Noah Craft born in Letcher, Kentucky. I have one on my tree, but you didn’t offer enough family info on you grandfather to help me know which one he was. I could use: birth, Death, marriage, any family history that you know of and then I would know which one you were talking about. Now, in Letcher, they usually made the mistake of spelling Craft with an “O” Croft. This may aide in your search.
Thanks for your comment and if in fact this is your line, then Welcome to the Family, Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

Hello ~ My husband and I are working on our family trees and we have come across this forum of the Craft family (husband). My husband is 8th generation from James Craft and Drusilla Hammons. We have a lot of information from this line but seeing/reading all the information that other lines have is very interesting. I would like to try to gather it all, or as much as possible. Any information that I have from my husband’s lineage, I will share as well.
Thank you,

Arch Craft lineage. Statement about pension is correct. Family lore has it that he split rails on his 100th birthday. Buried at Craft’s Colley, KY. Listened to grandparents and parents talk of this in my youth. Have some pictures of Craft’s on my page on face book but you must be a friend to view. Just ask.

Also this. Joella Craft Collier (now deceased) authored book “A Family Called Craft”. A second printing had many updates in it for those who are interested.
April 21, 2011 at 11:28 am
Per Joella and others including my dad, Virgil, family history is rather complete.
Joella and others traveled to Germany, the Palentin Section and visited with very distant cousins.
This branch of Craft family came to America seeking religious freedom. Were instrumental in founding what continues to be known as the “Primative Baptist Church”.
Very interesting reading, to say the least.

John Wilhelm Craft was my fifth great grandfather. His daughter Mary Polly Craft married Caleb Puckett. They were my fourth great grandparents. From there I’m descended from their daughter Rebecca who married James Whitaker. Just recently found out that John Wilhelm Craft had a second wife and another daughter named Mary Emily Craft who married a George Brown

Hi Sheila, I have been looking for my childrens, possible Cherokee heritage. The lineage of my husband was Donald Lee Hall b10-25-40,d2-20-08,.Clyde Allen Hall 12-12-15-Quapaw ,OK.,Terry Lee Hall Quapawb?/d?,his wife was Canzaly Allen Hall moved from Ok. to Flint , Mi. where she died in the 1930,s. Her parents were Dr. John Bunyon (or i)Allen and Evalina McDaniel Allen B.6-23-1858 Quicksand,Breathitt,Ky.,d.4-7-1925 in Quapaw, paper article said Miami-Ottawa Co.,Ok.Showed grave marker. These facts I know for certain. Next is where it gets shady because I found a site that said her father was Alexander McDaniel and mother, Marthann Frazier found they were married Aug.4,1857.Found nothing on Marthann, and Alexander lead to Breathitt Co., ky., but doesn’t say wife or children. Found one site that says Alexander’s mother was Elizabeth McDaniel and one place said husband was Preston Howard, another site says Elizabeth McDaniel b1822 was married to William Craft b1820…then on that same site it says Evolina McDaniel’s B was1856 d.1927 and was married to Keenas T. Daniel. Neither Evalina had a Canzaly, however, the crazy thing about the two is that the b./d. dates are almost the same…only similarity. Don’t really know what the question is , except to say many. If you can shed any light I’d really appreciate it.
May 8, 2012 at 10:23 am
Dear Shannon,
Thank you for your comment and please don’t believe everything you read online. You have to do the leg work yourself. Many mistakes were made in our family histories. So many people have the same name, they intermarried into the same families and its was so easy to get them confused. With that said, I’m also unclear as to which surname you’re asking about.
People read newspaper clippings and old family papers, when trust me, I’ve read some myself that I laughed so hard, I almost cried. One article, had a man’s dad’s name wrong, where he was from, what his dad did for a living, etc. Since I knew the man for over 30 years, I had no problem picking out the mistakes, but other reads would assume it was accurate since it was an obituary. I can only assume that the person that giving the information was brain damaged or smoking crack. I really have no idea, but was shocked that the newspaper would print such stupidity without checking some of the facts. Those mistakes were never corrected.
I personally spent once entire month trying to sort out 3 men named Jerry with the same Surname all 3 born within months of each other, in the same small town. That was hard work since one person who’d you think would have known, was really wrong. It happens, I’ve made a few really big mistakes myself. It can get bad quick, and the paperwork is usually all messed up, as well, so you have to check and recheck all of your facts.
The Craft/Back/Howard line is no stranger to that. As you can see from my blog, people still argue over it today. Once you get so far up the tree, its even more difficult. You’d think that with a name like Kenzilla – Canzilla – Canzaley – Canzellia – Canzalia, I have that many on my tree and one Cansada, it would be so easy to trace, but its just not so.
I do have a Preston Howard (1810-1885) [my 5th great grand uncle] on my tree. He was the son of James & Elizabeth Green. He married Sarah “Sally” McDaniel.
Name:
Sally Mcdaniel
Spouse:
Preston Howard
Birth:
1812 in KY
Marriage:
1835 in KY
But to be honest, I haven’t done any more work on this line.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
William H. Craft
Birth 4 Mar 1824 in Floyd County, Kentucky, USA
Death 18 Nov 1913 in Morgan County, Kentucky, USA
Was believed to have had an illegitimate son, Arthur McDaniel (1845-1930) with Elizabeth McDaniel (1825-1895). It happens. She later married William Benjamin Carpenter (1804-1898) and had one son Harrison Carpenter from Elliott, Kentucky. The problem here is there were two William Craft’s in 1850 about the same age, twenties, in Breathitt, Ky, both married to a wife Rhoda and have 2 different sets of children, but both having a daughter named Sarah, so somebody messed up somewhere. Not to mention the William Craft, same age, living in Johnson, Kentucky. That would be tough for anyone to try and separate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, as for their Cherokee heritage or a Native American background, I really have no idea about the McDaniel’s. If they had been born on the reservation they’d have a card. If they were born to Native American descendants living off the reservation, they would only have their parents version of the accounts. You can check with the local reservations to see what they have on your line. Then check land documents, If they bought land they had to disclose their heritage.Yes, many lied on that as well, but its a start. For the most part, you have to rely on what your Parents and Grandparents told you and go from there.
I know this was no help, but since I don’t have any additional research on this family or families, advice is the best that I can offer.
Good luck and thanks for your comment,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

Dear Shelia,
I’m looking for old photographs of the Craft Family for a family history book that I’m putting together. I have an old photograph of Joseph Lee Craft (1869 – 1960), his wife Dora Belle Craft, and four of their ten children which I can send you if you like. Joseph was a school teacher in Kentucky for 52 years. Please send your reply to my email address: thomaspweller@yahoo.com
Thank you.

I’ve seen several old pix, but I don’t own the rights to any of them. If you’re a member of the Magoffin County group on Facebook, they have several. I’ll see if I can get them to post. just don’t use them without permission.

Hello,
Archelaus Craft was my 4th great grand father (Martin Craft; William Marion Craft; Henry Craft; Archelous Craft; and Archelous Craft). Does anyone know if there’s a registry or something similar that someone is keeping to track the family name? I am in Arizona, but my Dad, Raymond Ardel Craft is 90 years old and still living in Reno,NV. I’d like to learn more about our family and would appreciate any contact with others who are trying to do the same thing.
Respectfully,

Hello. I, too, am a descendent of Archelous Craft, but I’m trying to find out exactly how. My grandmother was Ellie Marie Craft, bar in Mayking, KY in 1923, I believe. Her mother was Francis or Frances (Parsons) Craft, and I thin her father was Henry Craft. Any information on her lineage would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
June 29, 2014 at 4:26 pm
Dear Cindy,
Your tree is fairly defined. Ellie Marie Craft married Vern Milton Gathagan was the d/o of Francis Parsons Craft d/o of Joseph & Lucinda (nee Adams) Parsons married Henry Craft s/o Edward (Ned) and Nancy (nee Kincer) Craft. Craft families from Letcher, Kentucky. Ned s/o Archelous ‘Cheed” and Nancy Jane (nee Polly) Craft Jr. Nancy d/o Frederick Feathergill & Lydia (nee Adams) Kincer. Cheed s/o Archelous & Elizabeth (nee Adams) Craft Sr. Its a great line. I’m down from John Wilhelm Craft s/o Archelous & Elizabeth Craft.
I’m not personally acquainted with anyone from your branch, so I don’t know their personal history. Maybe try contacting some of the family tree members on Ancestry, Find A Grave or FB. I hope that I think they’d be excited to share what they have.
Thanks as always & Welcome to the Family,

Oh boy where do I start our families DNA comes back Craft sharing a ggg grandfather. I hate to stir the pot but we are Mulatto.. A C Craft was in the area at the time of conception. I believe that A C Craft 35 years old in 1900 has an affair with my gg grandmother she was a Mixed raced woman that went by the name of Lou.. Their Children’s name were Herbert, Paralee, and Minerva..
My cousin and I are at a slight disagreement which can be fixed if she can find Samuel Craft married to a Margaret Hartman and his dad William Craft married to a Sarah Alwood/Alward.. I feel these people are cousins. I just cant find the connections.. I do know with 100% certainty that A C Craft(Archelous) he was married to Larue and they were in Hawkins county at the time Herbert Ewing was born he took on his mothers name.. Can anyone help me..
Thank you

I am searching for information on a descendant of Ezekiel Craft born 1762 and died 1843 (Archelous’s Brother) his son was Ezekiel Jr born 1800 and died 1870, and continues to Alexander L Craft born 1825 and died 1896, his son was John Pinkney Craft 1868-1942, then Sidney Craft 1912-1969 then to his son James Gordon Craft 1937 and still living. I am searching for information on Sidneys first wife Mae Alice Davis which is whom I am trying to gain additional information on. my dad tells me that her and my grandfather were married a little over 4-5 yrs, after their divorce she was dating a man named Clarence Hunt, which I also can not find, not sure if he was a descendant of Rosa Hunt that married John Pinkney (I was hoping someone here could help me out with information they might have on this part of my family or point me in the direction where I might contact someone that maybe able to help. Please feel free to email me Polocksgal@yahoo.com and or send my request to someone that you know might have information. I am trying to solve this puzzle before the unfortunate happens with my daddy. if you can help I would greatly appreciate hearing from you, Thank you Victoria (Craft) Ingram

Hello, I am Pamela Craft McNamee. I believe my GGG grandfather was Archelous Craft Sr.The linage from there is his son William ( Rachael Parker) ,,Williams’s son,John Wesley(Lucinda Breeding), Johns’ son James Floyd(Vivie Alice Gulley)
then my father Floyd (Juanita Shelton). I started looking for any native American heritage, but have found none so far. Now I’m trying to find info about my grandmother’s, Rachael Parker from Tenn. And Lucinda Breeding from Ky. Also trying to find if Archelous’ family originated in England or Germany or somewhere else. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

You posted a blog on Jan 27, 2009 regarding the name canzalia or any of the other spellings of the name. I am a Barnett, daughter of Dallas, who was the son of Brownlow, who was apparently the son of Alford Barnett and canzalia carpenter, from breathitt, ky. With that name being so unique, there is little question that we’re speaking of the same person. I have little info on her but I think she is the daughter of Stephen Carpenter.

Archelous is my ggggggrandfather. I am the great grandson of Ben Craft. I would like a copy of JC Collier’s book A Family Called Craft. I am a historian in Southwest Missouri. My parents’ farm was the farm that Ben and Mary Clark first rented.
