September 25, 2011 at 9:45 pm eCan you get in contact with me? I am new to the “finding family history” familytree thing. My mother-in-law died about 2 weeks ago. A cousin gave us a family tree after the funeral. I had always tried to get her to research the family. Her mother’s dad (her grandfather) was a Warren Adkins. The only thing she told us about him is that he was Indian, and that he was mean. He had given her a family book about the Indian heritage when she was little, but it burned in a house fire. Her grandfather and grandmother were married in Cabell County, WV, I think. His father’s name was Clayton Adkins. I believe that he may somehow fit into your family tree. Can you help.
Thank you so much, Ute

PS: This part seems to be a reoccurring theme: The only thing she told us about him is that he was Indian, and that he was mean. You may need to check the wives lineage as well. I have some – but not all – let me know which ones and please be specific as to the dates.

Sheila,
Hopefully this question isn’t tedious by now, but I just came across your blog this week and was wondering if you were ever able to get any additional infomation, links to data, etc., on the whole Giovanni Patitte issue, that was discussion on your blog a couple of years ago. I seem to be able to trace my ancestry all the way to him on ancestry.com, but one wonders where the information came from.
Thanks very much,

Dear Tom,
I’ve personally stopped trying to marry the two men. Others swear they have the documents and are convinced there accurate. I’m not going to dispute it nor give it credibility. I do know that when entering this country, a lot of men had to change their names for various reasons; westernize if you will. I know it happened, can I prove it happened to our Poteete’s, no. I’m hoping that the woman that swears she can prove it will write a book releasing all of her documentation, but on the other hand, if she were able to obtain it, then so should the rest of us be able to find it as well. I’ll write some letters and see what I can turn up, there may be a few more rocks to kick over yet.
It never hurts to give it another look; fresh eyes and an open mind. No such thing as a dead horse when it comes to genealogy. So well see.

my great grandmother was lizzie spencer born in 1890. she married marion adkins who had been married before. they finally lived in wolfe county, ky. marion died in the 1940’s and lizzied lived in ohio til her death in 1987. i have heard that there is cherokee blood lines on lizzie’s side of the spencer family. her mother was possibly a Shepherd or shephard by maiden name. please send me any information on this side of the family if possible. thank you.

my family is marion adkins born september 1873 in kentucky. he married lizzie spencer august 9, 1905. she was his second wife. they had nine children and my grandmother mary adkins married george e. holt. i believe marion’s father was george w. adkins born 1829 in ky. lizzie’s father i believe was william spencer born feb 1855 in antioch, ky. lizzie’s mother could possibly be cherokee indian background. a lot of the spencers and adkins side of this family came from virginia and west virginia first. any information would be very helpful. thank you.
