I do apologize for not getting back with you sooner. I did post a few comments under “Cornstalk,” but decided it may be quicker to address this in a short post.
I’m not stating any of this to be FACT, you’ll have to do the legwork on this one yourself, but this is a brief overview of collected information from others notes on Joseph Adkins, so here we go…
Dicey Halbert B: abt 1804 Knox, Tennessee
{F:John Halbert (1782-1860) M:Susannah Elizabeth Higgins (1789 – 1856)} according to the Adkins families.
Married: J Atkins:
Marriage Date: 20 Oct 1825 Knox, TN
Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002
Name: Joseph Atkin
Spouse: Dice Halbert
Marriage Date: 20 Oct 1825
Marriage County: Knox
Marriage State: Tennessee
NOTE: There is an tiny “s” on but if you’re not looking hard you won’t see it. Unfortunately, they didn’t actually sign it. It was filled out for them, so no other info is available there.
NOTE: I’m only adding this SOURCE because Dice’s mother was a Haggins, there must be a tie in to your family somewhere: Source: THE TYNG FAMILY IN AMERICA by Brother Anthony of Padua, F.M.S. (Poughkeepsie, NY: Marist Brothers of the Schools) Copyright 1956 by Marist Press-Poughkeepsie,NY
Captain Joseph Atkins,Esquire, son of Andrew and Sarah Atkins, was born in Sandwich,Kent,England,in 1680,and baptized on November 4,1680. He married first ….Stover, in England. He settled at Newburyport, Massachusetts,in 1728. His wife died soon after this. On April 7,1730,he married Mary Dudley. He died January 21,1773.
For details on the Atkins family I refer my readers to “Joseph Atkins, the Story of a Family”,written by Francis Higginson Atkins in 1891.
Dudley Atkins SR.,the youngest son of Captain and Mary Dudley Atkins, was born in Newburyport,in January 1731. On May 4,1752,he married Sarah Kent. He died September 24,1767.
NOTE: National Biography OnLine, Entry on “Pocohantas.”.American National Biography OnLine, Entry on “Indian Wars.”. The Tyng Family in America, Brother Anthony of Padua.
These sources may or may not have anything to do with your line,, but a lot of people have married the two because of Dice’s mother’s Surname – family relationship. Also, if you study the early Powhatan’s on the Indian Scrolls, you’ll see a lot of them were Adkins.
Now the HALBERT families claim Dice’s parents were:
F: Stephen Halbert 1774-1860
M: Virginia “Ginny” 1775
You’ll have to go down that road, its just a place to start. For me, I love the hunt, so I welcome the challenge. I have to admit that I’m leaning toward Stephen & Virginia “Ginny” Halbert, because of the locations of the families, but that’s just me. I’d start there, just because it shows more promise.
Stephen 1774-1860 s/o Joel 1749-1818 & Hanna Davis 1749-1830 Halbert. You’ll need to track the brother’s & sister’s to know for sure. Find any other SURNAME “Atkin” (any variation thereof) relatives in the area at the time and track their marriages, wills, land documents, books, libraries, etc. Even some military records will show siblings.
Good luck, enjoy the hunt, expect to make a lot of mistakes and moreover, Welcome to the Family,

Hi Sheila,
I am just now finding this post (not sure why, as I check you blogs/posts frequently lol). Thanks for the info. It is helpful since somewhere along my search I made the connection/assumption that Joseph’s father was Jesse, son of William V.This changes my tree up on that branch signifigantly. I’ll let ya know what I find on the Hiigns/Halbert side.
I was also wondering about the descendants of Elijah Adkins and White Wing Cornstalk, there arent many posts about them in your website. I am curious if you’ve had many other inquiries about them or their descendants? I did search the Guion Miller Roll and found several Adkins listed there, one being:
37096 Eli Adkins Tenn.
but still yet no proof of which “Eli Adkins” that is.
I am so curious because my being descendant of White Wing ties me to two great Chiefs in history and I would love to connect the dots and prove that this is my heritage.
I read somewhere that you don’t have to prove degree of blood in th e Shawnee Tribe, only a connection. But as for the Cherokee, I’m still in search of a roll number on the Dawes Final Roll that connects to me. Being aware that it’s possible that I may not, I’m striving harder in my search. The thing I lack beyond connection is time, but isn’t that all of us, lol.
Your site is wonderful and helpful, again I thank you.

Dear Sheila,
I can see that I got somewhat confused. Am I correct in believing that Joseph Atkins 1780-1847, who married Dicey Halbert, is the son of Jesse Adkins 1754-1833. Jesse being the son of William Adkins 1721-1784 and Lydia Owens?

Dear Carie,
I realize that there isn’t much about Nancy on my blog, she is aka Big Nancy White Wing Cornstalk d/o Stout Man Wneypuechsika CORNSTALK (1742 – 1832) and Elizabeth Catherine See (1754 – 1827) did abandon her family Elijah Adkins (1764-1840) son of Parker Vincent Adkins (1720 – 1792) and Mary Polly Alexander Fry (Jones) (1730 – 1777) Granted the family does not recognize the (Jones) its is merely an excerpt name from the book written by Don Greene and I won’t dispute it here, nor give it merit. Take it as it is offered, only as an alternative. Nothing is written in stone.
Nancy ran off with Tecumseh abandoning Elijah and their sons, she left Little Nancy Adkins with the Cornstalk family. Elijah then moved away and changed the spelling of his last name to Atkins. Some have reverted it back to Adkins.
Nancy was Chalakatha-Mekoche-Shawano-Chalaka-Powhatan-Metis.
Elijah Adkins 1764-1840 3/4 Shawano-Hopia-Metis
Parker Adkins (1720-1792) 1/2 Shawano-Metis
s/o William & Elizabeth Parker Adkins
I’m not sure where you’re going with Jesse Adkins here, but this Elijah Adkins/Parker line is tracked in the Don Greene book should you decide to obtain a copy and read it, or just sign in at Amazon and skim it or not. Your choice.
I’m sure I didn’t help much here, but its a start, keep up the hunt.
I don’t cover her much on the blog since I’m not sure if I’m breaking any copyright laws, but as I’ve said before, how can we be – when it’s our family?! It’s our history – our heritage.
Thanks as always and Welcome to the Family,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

Thanks. I am curious, are there any ties with our Atkins lines off of Parker and/or William V. And. The many Chickahominy Adkins of WV?

I’m also in search of help. I am a Marshall from Milboro, Va of Bath county Va. my great grandmother was Ida C Keller, she was wife of Charles W. Keller, and the daughter of Lula Ailstock. My Grandma left me a note telling me that my great great grandmother died at an early age, she was of Indian decent and that her father was an Indian Chief or her Grandfather was a Cherokee Chief. My Grandfather thought it was her great grandfather who was Chief. I found Absolem Ailstock and Nancy J Ailstock were her parents. Was Absolem Ailstock of Bath County an Indian? When I look it seems he was white. Any help is appreciated. Sonya Marshall Deane
