Descendants of William JORDAN and Rachel MEADOR
GENERATION 1
1. WILLIAM1 JORDAN was born Bet. 1668 – 1693 in Essex Co., VA, and died in VA. He married RACHAEL MEADOR in VA. She was born in VA, and died in VA.
Notes for WILLIAM JORDAN:
I do not accept the “proof” I’ve seen so far that my Jonas is son of William of Essex Co. Va and his wife Rachel –that the Rachel Jordan who witnesses one of the Amelia Co. VA land deeds is his mother!
CAROLYN PIGG’S NOTE:  WILLIAM JORDAN WAS MARRIED TO RACHEL MEADOR…she was not his mother.

“My Jonas Jordan d. 1785 in Bedford Co. VA married Winefred???early to mid 1740s in Amelia Co. VA. They moved to Bedford late 1760s. Their eldest son is Absalom b. mid to late 1740s Amelia Co. d. 1826 Bedford Co.  Another son is Benjamin. These are the only “proved” children of this couple. It is VERY POSSIBLE they had a daughter named Winefred. Absalom m. circa 1770.. A daughter might be a bit old to “fit”, but this is a start.  Meanwhile, does anyone know anything more about Jonas and where he was before he appears in Amelia Co.?
He is NOT the son of William and Rachel Meador as published. All his children’s names are very “French” which makes me wonder if he is a recent imigrant?

Note by Larry Jordan:
Jonas is shown in this database as the child of William Jordan and Rachael Meador as a placeholder. There are researchers who believe this is the proper relationship.
Children of WILLIAM JORDAN and RACHAEL MEADOR are:
2. i. JONAS2 JORDAN, b. Abt. 1725, Bedford Co., VA; d. 29 Jun 1785, Bedford Co., VA.
ii. ABSALOM JORDAN, b. VA; d. 1795, Elbert Co., GA; m. MARY WALTON, Bef. Jan 1758, Albemarle Co., VA; b. VA.
Notes for ABSALOM JORDAN:
From: Linda Sparks Starr starr81@ix.netcom.com
Other VA Jordans I’ve tentatively placed as siblings of Jonas d. 1785 include: Absalom who married Mary Walton bef. Jan 1758 in Albemarle Co. VA. I think they went to Rowan Co. NC 1760ish and he is the one who died Elbert Co. GA in 1795.
Absolam m. Mary Walton dau. of William and Susanna, before Jan. 1758 per Wulfreck’s “Some VA Marriages”. Albemarle Co. VA deed records show him purchasing 220 acres from William Walton.  Goochland Co., VA records show a 1746 deed — land might have fallen into area that became Albemarle Co.As a resident of Rowan Co. NC, he sold his land in Albemarle Co., VA in 1760. I leave it to others to determine if he is the same Absalom who d. 1795 in Elbert Co. GA.
iii. JEREMIAH JORDAN, m.. LOUISA WALTON, Feb 1759, Caroline Co., Va.
3. iv. THOMAS JORDAN, d. Jun 1809, Culpepper Co., VA.
4. v. EDWARD JORDAN, d. Lunenburg Co. Va.
Generation No. 2
2. JONAS2 JORDAN (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1725 in Bedford Co., VA, and died 29 Jun 1785 in Bedford Co.,VA. He married (1) ?? ??. He married (2) WINIFRED MORRIS OR MAURICE ?? 1743 in Essex, VA. She was born Abt. 1729 in VA, and died in VA.

Hello fellow rooters,
I haven’t seen my particular Jordan line discussed yet, so decided to post a query of my own. My line beings with Jonas Jordan who appears in Amelia Co VA late 1730s/early 1740s. He is married by 1746 to a Winifred, “said to be Morris” by some researchers. They moved from Amelia to Bedford Co Va late 1760s where Jonas dies before 29 June 1785.
Known children included: Absalom d. 1826 Bedford Co. who was named “heir at law” in suit brought against him by brother Benjamin who wanted the land promised by Jonas, but never deeded. Benjamin won. I’ve tentatively positioned a Jonas Jr. who d. Nov. 1826 in AL as son of Jonas — from group sheet of a descendant of Jonas Jr.’s son James. He may be the Jonas in Franklin Co. VA 1786 arrested for horse stealing. I’m less “sure” about the William Jordan who married Lucy Stitch Jun 1780 in Bedford Co as being son of Jonas. And then there’s a
Winston who married in 1790s in Bedford.
GA in 1795.
Jeremiah Jordan who married Louisa Walton Feb. 1759 in Caroline Co. Va
Thomas d. Jun 1809 in Culpepper Co. because he had sons named: Absalom, William, Sharshall, George,  Thomas, William, John, (Absalom Jordan son of “My” Jonas, named a son Sashwell b. 1785) This Thomas is not to be confused with the Thomas of Henrico Co. or the one in Louisa Co.
Edward of Lunenburg Co. Va. who has sons Benjamin, William and Edward.
Can anyone offer more proof of relationships here? Take away any of my tentative siblings? I do not accept the “proof” I’ve seen so far that my Jonas is son of William of Essex Co. Va and his wife Rachel — that the Rachel Jordan who witnesses one of the Amelia Co. VA land deeds is his mother!

Rootsweb posting: May 2, 1999 by Linda Starr  I agree with Darla — the above given names are surely from the same root word–whatever that is. I’ve been told
3
it’s the southern pronunication of the informer’s uncle for Churchill but I can’t see it. Bear with me as I give my biannual “tentative brothers” of my Jonas Jordan d. 1785 in Bedford Co.. Va. “Sashwell” and other distinctive given names come out of his line; based on those same given names and marriages, I’ve grouped four Jordan lines together as possibly being kin. Based on thse same given names, I suspect I’m dealing with a French line, and some do appear in Quaker records.
I begin with my JONAS d. 1785 in Bedford Co. Va. His wife is “Winefred” based on various Amelia Co. VA deeds. I haven’t backed him out of Amelia Co. yet. Traditionally he is the son of William and Rachel (Meador) Jordan of Essex Co. VA. However, I don’t believe this for his descendants are not named “Meador” and “that Jordan” lines given names. Besides, “proof” comes with the witness of the 1768 Amelia Co. deed — Rachel Jordan. People use this witness “as proof” that “this” Rachel is his mother! (I’m serious folks.. Yes, “a” Rachel did witness the deed, but Jonas’ mother would be in her 80s…not exactly a person who might be expected to be around should anyone question the deed several years later. And this Rachel could be any number of other possible relationships to Jonas.).
Jonas’ heir at law is Absalom, who is sued by his brother BENJAMIN in Bedford Co. records. DAR has a line to Jonas via a “Jonas Jr.” who, I believe goes to AL. I have neither of those lines and haven’t located any other possible children of Jonas and Winefred. Absalom and his wife, Mary Ann (Hudson as her surname is not proven as far as I know) had the following chn: Rosannah d. bef. 23 Jan 1824 m. Wm. Dickerson of Cumberland Co. — had at least one son; LeRoy m. Rhoda Mayse, dau of John Mayse Dec 1806 Bedford Co.; Vincent d. 1849 Bedford Co. m. Elizabeth Mayse; Lucy d. bef. 25 Oct. 1841 m. Joshua Noble Dec. 1804; William M. Sally Preson Dec. 1807; Jeremiah d. 1846 Bedford Co. VA m. Lydia Dent Nov. 1807. (They lived in Breckinridge Co. KY at one time.) SASHWELL b. 14 Apr 1785 d. 7 Oct.1874 Breck.Co KY m. Nancy Allen “Nannie” Dent 21 Dec.1809. (The DENT Sisters were daus. of John); Ony m. Osborne Warner Jul 1804; and John.
Thomas Jordan of Culpepper Co., VA. His will was probated 19 Jun 1809 in Culpeper naming children: Absolam, William, Sharshall, George, Thomas, Frances, Anne, William, John, Sarah, Rachel and Mary. His wife was Mary. From something I have Sharshall’s birth as 1747. The will info comes from an abstract of the records I was researching other lines in. This is all I have on this Thomas.
Absolam m. Mary Walton dau. of William and Susanna, before Jan. 1758 per Wulfreck’s “Some VA Marriages”.
Albemarle Co. VA deed records show him purchasing 220 acres from William Walton. Goochland Co., VA records show a 1746 deed — land might have fallen into area that became Albemarle Co. As a resident of Rowan Co. NC, he sold his land in Albemarle Co., VA in 1760. I leave it to others to determine if he is the same Absalom who d. 1795 in Elbert Co. GA.
JEREMIAH of Carolina Co., VA. He married Louisa Walton in Albemarle CO., VA 1759 per “The Douglas
Register”
Again, I’m not sure these four are brothers; but given the similarities, I think they are. Linda
