PA. Archives, Sixth Series, Vol. 5, Pg. 678. John McGriff
on payroll of PA. for militia services, August 5, 1792 to
September 29, 1792 under Capt. Henry Felger, paid by
Charles Campbell, Lt. of Westmoreland Co., PA. On
October 10, 1774 John McGriff and his son Patrick
participated in the Battle of Point Pleasant along with
1,100 other Virginia Militiamen against 1,200 Miami
and Shawnee Indians led by Chief Cornstalk, Blue
Jacket and Little Turtle. It was a day long battle on
the Ohio River at the mouth of the Kanawa River that
was fought hand to hand, tree to tree and rock to rock.
The battle ended that afternoon when the Indians
decided they had enough, withdrew, and re-crossed the
Ohio River and returned to their homes in upper Ohio.
More than 50 militiamen lay dead and many were wounded. Among those killed was Colonel Charles
Lewis, brother of the commanding General, Andrew
Lewis, who was killed in the first shots of the battle.
Later in 1775, as the Revolutionary War began John
McGriff and his sons left Virginia and went to South
Carolina were they joined the South Carolina Militia.
Patrick would rise to the rank of Colonel and James
to the rank of Captain and the 16-year-old Thomas
also joined the militia. Colonel Patrick McGriff would
fight under General Andrew Morgan and General
Nathaniel Greene and it is said, was at the English
surrender at Yorktown. Sons John Jr. and Richard,
who had remained in Pennsylvania, joined the
Pennsylvania Line. As the revolution ended all the
brothers survived and came home to marry and
raise large families. John Jr. remained in Pennsylvania
and his descendants today are in the Western
Pennsylvania area. Richard and his family left
Pennsylvania and went to Nicholas County , Kentucky
where they can be found in 1800. They eventually
migrated to Warren County, Ohio by 1805 and finally
settled in Darke County, Ohio where Richard died Abt.
1820. Thomas migrated North to Kentucky also and
he eventually settled next to his brother Richard, in
neighboring Preble County, Ohio where he died in
1821.

Old Fashioned Chicken n’ Dumplin’s
1 whole chicken
1 1/2 c flour
1/2 c Crisco shortening
Milk
Butter
Salt & Pepper to taste
In a large pan or Dutch oven cover the chicken with water- boil until done. Remove from the broth and bone when cool. Reserve the broth. Bring the broth to a rolling boil while making the dumplings.
Dumplings:
Mix flour with salt, cut in Crisco and add a little cold water to make dough. Roll out thin and cut into strips.
Carefully drop the dumplings into broth and gently separate them with a fork. Boil until they begin to “puff up”. Slow the boil down to a simmer and carefully add the boned chicken. (should be in small pieces).
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Add approximately 3/4 to 1 cup milk and a 1/2 stick margarine.
Simmer over very low heat for a couple of hours. Occasionlly stir but be very careful not to make “mush” out of the dumpling.Being careful not to scorch them. If you have a heat diffuser it would be a good idea to use it.

Divorce agreement
THIS IS SO INCREDIBLY WELL PUT AND I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE IT’S BY A YOUNG PERSON, A STUDENT!!! WHATEVER HE RUNS FOR, I’LL VOTE FOR HIM.
Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives,
socialists,Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:
We have stuck together since the late 1950’s, but the whole
of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce.
I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course.
Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right so let’s just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.
Here is a model separation agreement:
Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.
We don’t like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You
are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we’ll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O’Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them).
We’ll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We’ll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO’s and rednecks. We’ll keep the Bibles and
give you NBC and Hollywood .
You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we’ll retain
the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we’ll help provide them security.
We’ll keep our Judeo-Christian values.. You are welcome to
Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N. but we will no longer be paying the bill.
We’ll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars.
You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.
You can give everyone health care if you can find any practicing doctors. We’ll continue to believe health care is a luxury and not a right. We’ll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I’m sure you’ll be happy to substitute Imagine, I’d Like to Teach the World
to Sing, Kum Ba Ya or We Are the World.
We’ll practice trickle down economics and you can give
trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it often so offends you, we’ll keep our history, our name and our flag.
Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other
like minded liberal and conservative patriots.
In the spirit of friendly parting, I’ll bet you ANWAR which one
of us will need whose help in 15 years.
Sincerely,
John J. Wall

Hi, I have two Metcalf lines in my tree. One is back to Joseph b. 24 March 1732/33 Ipswich,MA they run into my Adams line. Am happy with what I have on this line—would I like to back farther, absolutely! The other Metcalf line threatens my sanity! Gt. grandfather Jacob was b.21 Aug 1829 VA d.3 Apr 1901 St. Louis, MO He was married twice 2 sons by the first, 2 daughters by second. Cannot find his parents!!!I can trace him (documented)from 1850 to 1901 that’s it!Have recently found his gt.gt.granddaughter who shared pictures of some of his 2nd family.Of the 4 children he had the only one I can’t find after 1900 is Icena Metcalf b.Aug 1899. This Metcalf line connects with my Cook line which connects with my Adams line. Any suggestions? Carolyn
September 10, 2009 at 8:49 pm
My suggestion is to check the Virginia records. Do you have any idea what town or county in VA he originated? If so, start there. Then start checking Church, Cemetery, Newspapers, Will’s and Dowry records for that area. Even if he had been disinherited, you should find something for the siblings. Any record you can find with known family members are a plus.
Hope this helps.
September 11, 2009 at 8:08 am
Sheila,
Thanks for the suggestion for Jacob Metcalf, unfortunately I have no idea what town he was from, I think he had at least one brother W.W. Metcalf. Only found him one time in Iowa and am not really sure that he was Jacob’s sibling!Jacob was in Iowa from 1850-1870 (have marriage record)moved to MO.,was in IL 1880,back to MO in 1889, died there in 1901.Didn’t own any property after 1870. Have pictures of Jacob’s 2 sons and 1 daughter, grandchildren, if anyone connects will be happy to pass them on, also marriage, census, death records. Carolyn
September 11, 2009 at 9:45 am
What was Jacob’s wife’s name (Family Surname from) families tend to move around together, intermarry and are generally buried near one another. We sometimes find clues on one person when looking for another.
What do the death records show? Any relatives listed? Parents? Informant? Have you checked the cemetery to see other listed Surnames?
Bob Metcalf’s family goes up another way, maybe he will have more information than I.
Thanks for your comments,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf
September 11, 2009 at 10:16 am
Sheila,
I do not want to be a “pain the neck”. Jacob’s 1st wife was Mary Tyler, have her family line researched. Have a picture of her “civil war” brother and one of her sister and her husband. None of Mary!Death record only gives my grandfather Horace Leslie Metcalf, cemetery is one of those unfortunate abandoned ones. I was able to give the gen.society names of my family buried there. I feel like I have found the impossible brick wall. Just keep hoping that someone out there will say “my family member is brother/sister to Jacob!Hope springs eternal!
Thanks again
Carolyn
September 11, 2009 at 10:39 pm
Not a problem, I love to hear from everybody. I too hope that someone will say, “Hey, I know them.” Don’t give up yet. It may take a while but I’m sure it will come.
I’m still hoping the same thing for the Reed’s I have listed. A total dead end so far, but I just keep holding on to the belief they are out there somewhere, saying find me. So I too, like you, keep beating the bushes.
Thanks for your comment,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf
PS: Did you check Bob’s tree? Like I said before, he goes up another way so you may tie in there. Don’t hurt to look. He is very helpful, so feel free to ask him a question or two. He has helped me in the past. I’m sure he will you as well, if he knows anything on this line.
Best Wishes,
Sheila

Hi,
I am having the hardest time trying to research my mother’s maternal line. I’m starting to wonder if any of the info that my aunt provided is true or not. I have my grandmother, Mary (possible middle name Frances) Adkins b. 1873 in Elliott Co., KY. Her parents were supposed to be Henry Adkins and a woman possibly surnamed Jarrell. I can find nothing about Mary Adkins until the 1900 census where she appears as a servant with her 7 yr. old daughter, Alice but still using the maiden name, Adkins. She later married a Miles Mays and she may have died in 1944. I would very much appreciate it if you could share any information you might have on Mary, her father and/or mother. She may have been illegitimate or the parental names may be wrong. I just don’t know why there is such a dead end. I do have other Adkins ancestors on my mother’s paternal side as well but they have been easier to trace.
Anyway, your site keeps coming up in my searches so I thought I’d ask here. I posted earlier on the Adkins page, but have added here my difficulty locating Mary before 1900. Thanks for any help.

There was a link between the two families in Elliott. I’m still looking for the her record. I couldn’t find one on my tree. Which is odd since most of my Adkins line ran thru Elliott.

Hi Sheila,
It appears from your posts that you are very adept at genealogy research, especially as it relates to the Adkins line, which brings forth my inquiry. My grandmother was Mary Susan Adkins, born May 27, 1888, in Elliott County, KY., and died November 13, 1978, in Morgan County, KY. I came across a source that identified her genealogy as being in a direct line of descent through Eli Adkins, 1837-1910?, and Absalom Adkins, 1810-1870. My sister says that this information contradicts everything that she knew about our grandmother’s ancestry, and that this information must be incorrect. Is this something upon which you can shed further light?
Thanks,
Scott Barker
June 24, 2010 at 6:57 am
Dear Scott,
I thank you for your information, but to be honest, I don’t have a daughter Mary Susan listed as a daughter for Eli (1837-1911) s/o of App’s and Emley Elizabeth Ison Adkins (1842-1905) d/o Ira N. and Lousina Sparks Ison.
I do love a good hunt…
Q: Have you skipped a generation between Mary Susan and Eli?
Q: Do you have access to Mary Susan’s birth and/or death certificates?
Q: When did she marry Wilmore Barker?
May I ask, whom does your sister report as for her lineage?
I’ll start looking and see what I can turn up.
Thanks for your comment and Welcome to the Family,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

I did find that she married Wilmore Barker s/o Jeremiah and Catherine McMillian.
It is possible that she fell through the cracks. I found one Mary S Adkins working as a 10 year old servant for Peter and Martha Smith, living in Devils Fork, Elliott in 1900.
Eli had one daughter Sarah Ann Adkins that they report as being born in 1872. I don’t have any other information on her than that.
I’ll keep looking.

I thought I posted yesterday. If this is duplicate sorry. I am an Adkins/Bias. my tree is intersecting itseld. I have found the same realatives on mother’s and father’s side. The Adkins line seems to be from Wm, Parker, Hezekiah, WM, John “Blackhead”. It is the children of John that appear on both sides of my tree.
Can you sort anything out?

I’m sorry, I thought I did that. They were double first cousins.

Hi Sheila, I wanted to tell you that I love your website, you really seem to have it together. I am a descendent of the Adkins, my line goes Me, Gilbert Mollett, Hattie Williams Mollett, Susan Anna (Susie) Hopkins Williams, Nancy Adkins Hopkins, Winright (Greasy) Adkins (1825), Henry Adkins (1799), Winright Adkins (1775), Henry Adkins (1730), William V Adkins (1689), that’s as far back as I can get, but looks like I can get some help here. I looked at a lot of your marriage records and wills and such. Well, anyway, just wanted to say hi and thank you for what you do.

Dear Darrell,
Thanks for the kind words this morning. I do work hard on my family tree. I love to share ideas and references. I know the line you’re talking about. Joel Adkins whom half my family believes fathered App’s goes to back to Winright then to up to Parker Adkins.
Thanks for sharing and Welcome to the family,

You posted a response to an inquiry made by my son John Vincent Adkins of St Louis asking you for help in finding and contacting me back in Aug of 2010. He did subsequently get a hold of me – but also as part of your response to him, you posted our genealogy, including his original email to you. I wanted to thank you for your research efforts and, as I never new about my family (Adkins), you have given me a great gift and one that words cannot express enough my gratitude for. Thank you very much.
However, I wanted to ask you if you would please remove his email from that posting which is still out their on your website and the web, it is personal and I find it uncomfortable to have my personal family problems and politics out their in such as public way.
Please confirm on my personal attached email confirmation that you have removed this personal information. (my sons email to you)

Sheila, I am part of the large Adkins clan. To be short Parker V Adkins, who was the grandfather of Richard Adkins. He was the father of Rosannah Monroe Adkins who married John Johnson in TN. They moved to Illinois and became parents of David C Johnson who was my great grandfather. Have you run across any other information about the Johnson’s he belonged to? Thanks, Anita

Hello,
I have looked high and low and can not find out where my grandfather was buried. I found his wife and one daughter, but not him. Can you help?
His name was Joseph Newton Howard b.1866 in Magoffin County, Ky.
He died in 1908. As far as I know her never left Magoffin County. He was married to Martha Debord Howard in 1886. He remarried Sarah Permelia “Mellie” Howard daughter of John Gentry and widow of James Clay Howard, in 1905, after Martha died in 1903. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you, Barbara Howard Pointer

Dear Barbara,
I just realized that I had removed her as a daughter at some point. Thanks for pointing that out. I try to make it as accurate as possible, but things happen over the years. She’s back now.
I see that most people have John Gentry’s parents as James Mattox Gentry (1838-1870) and Polly Nichols (1808-1854). I can’t verify that.
NOTE: I can’t find my records on it but…
If memory serves me correctly, this is the John Gentry that changed his name during the Civil War. He paid someone surname of Gentry to fight for him in the war and the worst possible thing happened, the man was killed so John’s real name died with that man – he had to keep Gentry. I can’t verify that right now, but I will keep looking. Just don’t quote me on this, yet. I’ll see where I got that.
Please take a minute to email Todd Magoffin@foothills.net and ask him what he knows. He has a lot of info on everyone from Magoffin.
Sorry that I couldn’t be of more help.
As always,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

Hi Shelia,
I have spoken with Todd, but he can’t find the information either.
On the matter of John Gentry, the one I’m writing about, was b.1835
m. Elizabeth Howard 02 Aug 1864. They had five children, William,Sarah Permelia “Melie”, (who married my grandfather after my grandmother died.)
Joseph N,Rosetta and Elijah Fillmore Gentry. It’s possible that my grandfather may have been buried where “Melie” was buried, but I can’t find that location either. One of her children with James Clay Howard was buried in Waverly, Ohio, but I don’t believe she was. It’s like my grandfather disappeared under a mountain in Kentucky. Thanks for your response.
I’m about to give up.
Barbara

Yes, I do have all of that on my tree, but it seems to me like he is the one, I just need to find my research on him to verify that. One man Surname Allen did the same thing, really messed his family tree & the family up.
I’ll keep looking…

I’m trying to get in touch with Darrell Mollett who commented here. We are related through the Mollett’s and I no longer have an up to date email address. Pleas contact me at planetdavis@gmail.com. Thanks, Shanna

Dear Shanna,
I’m sorry but it would be exhausting for me to try & find his email address. I don’t keep them. It’s true they are stored to the site, but I can’t pull them up like that. If you can give me the link, then I can research it that way. But even at that, I can’t give you his email address. I can however send him an email, that is to say, if the email address he gave at the time of his post is still active, then he can contact you if he chooses to.
As always,

Joseph Newton (1866) married Martha Caroline Debord in 1886. She died in 1903 and Joseph married Sarah Permelia Gentry Howard in 1905. He died in 1908 and I’m trying to find out where he is buried. My grandmother is buried at David M Cooper Cemetery in Magoffin County Ky. I can not

Hello Sheila!!
My name is Tia Sparks. My Great Grandfather was Cecil Adkins (1900-1974) and his fathers name was Solomon Adkins and lived in Kentucky. I know that I part indian and I believe that I am apart of your family tree.
I don’t realy know how to start this conversation, but I would love to learn more and see if my suspecious are correct. I hope that this website is still active. Please feel free to contact me, perhaps you can help me understand the information that you have surrounding Solomon a little more :)

Dear Tia,
I know I’ve been very busy lately and haven’t posted much. I get many emails daily & try my best to respond. I do pay to maintain my tree at Ancestry but have since learned from family members that Ancestry doesn’t allow them to see my stuff like it use to and for that I’m very sorry.
If you’ve read any of my blog, then you know I’m a very active wife, mother, Grandmother, and sister, aunt, etc. but this is my passion so I work on it often. I do try to get to as many requests as I can.
I was working on my tree yesterday, I hadn’t planned to do so today, but thought I’d take a quick look for you.
You’re absolutely correct, Cecil Adkins (1900 – 1974)
is my 2nd cousin 2x removed. Many trees have two identical Cecil’s one Cecil Parker Adkins died in Jun 1974 in Kentucky that married Rosella Beach, the other Cecil married Anna and died in September 1974 in Indiana.
I don’t currently have his line on my tree. If you’d like to send your updated info I can add it, if you’d like. I was trying to stop at 3rd generations 3rd cousins, but I’ll admit, i have a lot of 5th & 6th if I have their info.
Thanks as always and Welcome to the Family,
Sheila Jean Adkins Metcalf

I have a genealogy question for you. There is John Pearson b.1760 who is married to a Betsy, who might be a Godsey. Could this couples actually be John Pearson who married Betsy Goodrich/Goodridge in Orange Co, VA in 1788. The ages and dates fit quite well. Betsy Goodr*** was 21 years of age at her marriage making her dob 1767 or so. Witness to the wedding was Priscilla Franklin (probably related to the John Franklin that married Mary Pearson, sister of John) and Killis Oliver was the bondsman. Oldest son is named Achilles. Coincidence?

Hello Shelia, Wrote to you about my grandfather, Joseph Newton Howard. Now I have another question. Do you know when or where Joseph W. Howard, his father died? The last I have of him was the 1900 census that showed him with his second wife, Jennie. I’ve searched for three years and can’t find any mention of him other than the 1900 census. He was the County Attorney for Magoffin County, KY in the late 1800’s and early 1900. There doesn’t seem to be so much as a snapshot of him. Hard to imagine there wouldn’t have been some mention of him, seeing that he was in politics.
Thanks for your blog.

While doing a little research back on my father’s father’s family I discovered in Ohio 1850 , my great-great grandfather, John Christian living with his mother and sister in Ross County Ohio. There was also a four-year-old in the house named Ottawa Atkins. Ottawa took part in the Civil War conflict and I find no other records following that for him. Just wondering if you knew what Ottowa Adkins relationship to the Christian family was?

Hi Sheila,
My 5th great-grandmother is Susannah Adkins who married Thomas McGriff. They moved to Preble County, Ohio. From what I have read, Susannah is the daughter of Parker Adkins, son of William Adkins and Elizabeth Parker. I am looking for any information that shows Susannah is Parker’s daughter. Do you have any documentation or leads that can help me? Thank you so much.
