Catherine DOLSBURY
Sex: F
Note:
We received a large packet of material from my cousin Frederick L. Reid, Jr. and it contained more info on three unidentified Reed/Reid families in the Reed book: James Reed on page 220, John Dolsbury Reed on page 277, and Thomas S. Reedon page 287. We had established earlier that James and Thomas were brothers and that John Dolsbury Reed was a son of James but there were puzzling questions even after it was discovered they were children of Catherine (Dolsbury) Reed. Who was their father? Some of these questions have been answered.
Catherine was the dau of one Lyles Dolsbury and Ursula Davis. Lyles was a veteran of the Revolutionary War who named in his will Catherine Reed and grandchildren Hiram Hyden, James Reed, Catherine Cook, Thomas Reed and Nancy -?-.
I will summarize the new material we received: Catherine m. 1. -?- Hyden and had at least two sons: Hiram Hyden m. Patience Rudd and migrated to West Liberty, KY and William Taylor Hyden who lived in Indiana, then on to Missouri, and then Arkansas. He wasreferred to as a doctor. He applied for and was received into the Choctaw Indian nation. His application claimed his grandfather Lyles Dolsbury was a full blooded Choctaw Indian!
Catherine then m. 2nd to William Reed/Reid and their known children were (1) James Reed m. in Tazewell Co. VA to Sally Reed. Steve Rudd believes her to be Sally Rudd. James migrated to White Oak in Morgan Co. KY.
Child (2) was Ursula Reed b. 1838 m. Havila Cook. They lived in the Magoffin area and are buried at the mouth of Cripple Creek. Child (3) was Nancy Reed . She m. Edward Rose, a shoemaker b. NC. They with children Thomas b. 1847 and Rebecca J. b. 1849 are listed in the 1860 Tazewell census. Child (4) was Thomas S.Reid who migrated to Magoffin and married Minerva Adams, dau of William "UncleBilly" Adams, son of Stephen Adams and Mary Webb. After Mary's death Stephen married 2nd to Catherine (Dolsbury) Reed!! In all likelihood she is buried in the Salyersville Christian Church churchyard.

In the 1850 Tazewell Co. VA we find Catherine Reed age 59 (b. 1821), Thomas age 20 (b. 1830) and Lyles Dolsburyage 105 (b. 1745) d. 2 Aug 1850. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

His daughter Catherine married a William Reid according to family members. Thomas Reid, their son, married Manervia Adams, dau of William Billy Adams and Elizabeth Williams. Billy Adams was a son of Stephen Adams and Mary Webb. AfterMary Webbs death, Stephen Adams married Catherine (Dolsbury) Reid.

The 1850Tazewell Co. VA census lists James M. Reed age 27, Sally age 24, John D. age 7, Aronton age 6, Catherine A. age 4, Hiram H. age 3, and William T. age 1. The1860 Magoffin census lists additional children, Thomas S. age 9, Reese B. age 8, James N. age 7, Nancy N. age 5, and Sarah age 2. James married in 1841 to Sarah Rudd b. 1826, dau of Archibald Rudd (b. 1790). Archibald m. in 1822 to Nancy Woosley b. 1809. Archibald was a veteran of the War of 1812 and a son of Archibald Rudd, Sr. and Martha, according to some sources.

Not really, this is all the info I have on the Cook family from Magoffin County, Kentucky at this time. Grats Reed told the undertaker Robbert Reed that Maggie Cook's father was (Vibey) Viley Cook and Marth Hammond.

So, I emailed the Magoffin County Historical site to see what they had on the family. Above is the quote from their response, you can check their website for more details.

The only Cook family that lived in Magoffin County at the time was Havila Cook and Martha Reed. Since my Great Grandfather "Grats" was a "Reed", I'm reasonably sure he knew who his wife's parents were.

Martha Hammond (only one in the town) was supposed to have married L. C. Wells.

This is all I have. The family is still working on it. We need someone from the Cook side to step up and volunteer the information. Are you a Cook? or a Reed?

Thanks as always,
Sheila J Metcalf

I quoted the entire article that he wrote. What missed parts? There was only one COOK family living in Magoffin in the late 1880's. The two Harviley "Havila" aka Viley Cook's are the only known male Cook's members in Magoffin County at the time. On my Great-Grandmother Margret Cook Reed aka Maggie's death certificate her husband, my Great Grandfather Grats Reed states that her parents were Vibey Cook and Marth Hammond. There was only one Marth Hammond and one Viley Cook. But Viley married Martha Reed and had numerous children.

Now since Grats was a "Reed" as was the undertaker Robbert Reed - I'm sure they would have known who her parents were. I've never found a Reed to argue that point with me. I wish one of the Cook family members could clear this up for us. But so far it remains a mystery.

I personally, had never understood the relationship of Catherine Cook to Lyles A Dolesbury or how his daughter Ershula (her mother) was a "REED" - that married Harviley Cook? or who Catherine Cook's significant other was; that sired her children. I have looked for their death certificates - but no luck.

But there was a Havila Cook (same age) alive and well living, and in Oregon - long after she states that she is a WIDOW.

I hope that clears this up for you. If you have something to add to this about the family, please don't hesitate to comment.
