I am researching George Fugate husband of Martha Howell, and believe he could be a son of Martin, for a lot of reasons.
Just saw your site and note that Martin wasn’t born in Moccasin Valley, Russell County, Virginia. Russell County wasn’t formed in 1725 and Martin’s sons didn’t migrate to Moccasin Creek until 1771.
I list Martin’s sons just as you do, but don’t know they are proved except Zachariah.
Thanks,

First off, Thank you for your comment. You’re the first person to ever comment on my Fugate family.
Now for my “Fugate” family; the research was done over 30 years ago by two of my mom’s first cousins. When my mom died, her cousin Frank and wife Marilyn gave me a printed copy of all their hard work.
I have done some research on my own, on the the Fugate’s, as is cousin Connie, and we share the info we find.
I didn’t argue with any of their findings because they had done all of the leg work, so to speak.
I don’t doubt what your saying is true because I too had read that some where??? I just assumed he was still born there, they just hadn’t declared it a CITY yet. If not we will need to track down a birth place in VA.
Can you get me the info on this George Fugate and I’ll e-mail it to all of my Fugate contacts and I’ll put a call into to Frank & Marilyn and see what they have on him. I’ll shake the bushes and see what falls out.
I’m not making any promises here, but I will do some VA Colony and Migration research to see which Fugate’s were there. I did see a Fugate name listed but I didn’t link it to anyone.
Thanks again for your comment,

Sheila,
Thanks you. The George Fugate from whom I descend was born abt 1765 in Fauquier County, Va. and was first noted William Smoots lease for 310 acres in the Manor of Leeds. George rented 198 acres in the Smoots property in 1786.
George married Martha Howell, the daughter of William Howell of Fauquier/Frederick County and the two had the following children: Katharine, Sarah, Mary, Leticia, Lewis, Zachariah and Martin. This Fugate family line is well documented down to my father Wilbur Fugate.
George moved to Hopkins County, Kentucky with his neighbors Stephen Ashby, William Berry, the Howells and other in 1797 or so to land granted to Captain Stephen Ashby for Revolutionary War service.
The George Fackett (if a Fugate) is almost certainly our George, as George Fugate the son of Francis Fugate would have been too young. This is new information to me, by the way, so thanks.
I believe now that our George is the son of Martin, as that is about the only fit that works. But have no proof.

Thanks

Sheila,
Another question, if I may? You list Martin Fugate’s wife as Sarah Clark. Do you know what the source is for this marriage.
As a result of you information, I’ve orderd a book that has a map of the leases in the Manor of Leeds, which may help locate George Fugate. I am increasingly leaning toward Martin as the father of George, as I am able to rule out others. However, John is still a possibility also.
Thanks once more,
Gary Fugate

I’ve checked every old document I can find for George and every spelling I could think of. He must have spelled it really strange, hopefully not as weird as Edward did. LOL I’ve checked all military, colony, and land grants. Nothing new. No will or mention in a will. I think we need to start checking the cemetery and old church records. Maybe he paid his tithes and this will show where he attended and with whom. Those old churches ruled with their tithing records and minutes. This is all we have to go on at this point. I’m kind of on board with you here but we need more to go than just a hunch. I’ll keep looking. I still hope he’s related to Edward. I wonder if any of Edward’s descendants kept that spelling? LOL If I hadn’t have found his pension records paid ti that name, I would have never believed it myself.LOL I’ll try to check some old books on the Fugate’s as well. It’s just that no one seems to have any old documents on George.
I was looking for Martin’s marriage bond. I thought I had it but I can’t find the record. I will post it as soon as I track it down again.

Sheila,
Last fall I learned of a book titled “The History of Hopkins County, Kentucky” by Maurice K. Gordon. The book contains lots of references to George Fugate from the time he arrived in Hopkins County (1799 or earlier) until his death in the 1830’s.
An interesting note in the book discusses Vincent Fugate and his will and the fact that George and Vincent surveyed together in 1799 for land on Elk Fork of Pond River.
Vincent appeared to have died in 1807 or so and nowhere can I find this will, Gordon references.
Anyway, this Vincent guy doesn’t help the cause very much, because I can’t find any reference to him in Virginia. He almost certainly was a relative of George’s, but that is about it. If either Martin, Josiah or John are George’s father, then Vincent is probably a brother.
Now, the reason I lean toward one of Josias Fugate’s three sons as candidates for George’s parentage is the way that George named his children. They are either named after his in-laws or are named Zachariah and Martin. When you named Martin’s wife as Sarah Clark, that rang a bell, as George and Martha named one of their daughters Sarah.
Another reason is that George lived in exactly the same area as Martin, Josiah and John. So if I can pinpoint his exact lot and know the neighbors, it creates a statistical match. Thin proof, I know, but step by step, these little treasures of information build a good case. Your help opened up a whole new world to explore.
One of my hobbies is metal detecting for gold in Eastern Oregon and each little gold nugget I find, is just such a treasure.
Thanks,
Gary

Sheila,
Quit follow up – just located George, James and Edward Fugate in the Bourbon County, Kentucky Tax lists for the years 1792, 93, 95, 96, 97, (no 98 list) and Edward and James there in 1799. They were listed variously as Feugate, Fugate and Fuget.

I’m with you on this one. After looking at the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census for Hopkins and Clay Counties. I do think you are on to something here. He named his children. Lewis, Martin and Zachariah. YEAH! I’m sure your thinking what I’m thinking, Father and Grandfather.
So lets will try to track down every document we can get our hands on and try to help prove this one. A will would be amazing but some local or war records with family info would be good. An old family bible would be amazing too.

Sheila,
could you please tell me about the source of Peter Fugate was from Scotland and that he is the father of Josias.Thanks.

This list shows a 10 year period between children. I believe I am descended from a Sarah Fugate b 1740-1755 in Virginia. Also believe that the name Sarah would be passed down in the family. Any thoughts?

To be honest, we were fairly sure there must have been more children, but we haven’t been able to document any. Sarah is one of the most common of all female names.
Can you provide any proof that she was a daughter? A will, dowry or land record? Something that ties her to the family. Burial within the family cemetery or bible records are a good place to start. Even if its thin, its a place to start.
I’ll do some serious checking on this, because if you find one child there are usually more. This could plug a big hole.
Thanks for your comment,

I have an interest in the Fugate families of American. I believe many of them to be descendants of the Muscheon/Legant/Fougere family of Huguenots who maintained Maritime trade between the East/West Indies, Europe and Middle Colonies during the 1600s. I can identify three main branches of the family who settled in Scandinavia, Ireland, and Kentucky due to their unique genetic contribution to the human gene pool. These families are carriers of the “Pictish Gene” (methemoglobinemia) which renders in humans a blue tint to the skin (particularly lips and nail beds) and can lead to blue baby syndrome (healthy blue babies). Al though this trait usually fades during infancy, o population bottlenecks where cousins frequently intermarry may give rise to a race of blue people who have blue skin permanently. This has happened in Finland, Ireland, and Kentucky. I myself am a carrier of this trait and am descended from the Muscheon/Musteen branch of the family with ties to the East Indies that settled in Haiti and the Middle States (MD, VA, NC). The genealogy links to Fougere and Legant. Anyone interested in helping me to research this united lineage may contact me via my website. http://www.secrethistoryx.com where I will have a page dedicated to the Blue Families. I also have a site link on http://www.Rodovid.org [category: methemoglobinemia] and a public tree on http://www.Ancestry.com.
