ALEXANDER MONTGOMERY FAMILY TREE

Name: Alexander Montgomery

Given Name: Alexander

Surname: Montgomery

Sex: M

Birth: abt 1740 in Argyll Township, Albany, New York

Death: bef 1840 in, Orange, North Carolina

Name Suffix: II

Grandfather

William Montgomery (1660-1721)

Grandmother

Isabella Burnett (1650-1750)

Father

Alexander Montgomery (1705-1768 )

Mother

Anna Southerland (1705- 1738 )

Alexander Montgomery II, was born about 1740 possible in Orange County North Carolina. He married Martha Walker, daughter of John Walker and Ann Houston, About 1760.

Alexander II’s father died and left him 250 acres of land on Buck Creek in Amherst County Virginia. Alexander 2nd sold this land to his brother-in-law Robert Barnett, of Amherst County, Virginia.

Alexander 2nd received 170 acres of land in Orange County, North Carolina, from his father’s will. On 3 Jun. 1769 Alexander and wife Martha deeded this land to his father’s widow, Mary Montgomery.

Alexander II and Martha Walker Montgomery moved their family to the Clinch River area of Southwest Virginia in 1771. They lived at the head of little Moccasin Creek where Alexander built a log cabin. He later received a land claim for 150 acres on Big Moccasin Creek dated 3 Dec.1782.

Alexander served in Moore’s Fort on Clinch River (in Castlewood) during the Revolution. He was listed in the troops at Moore’s Fort on 30 June 1777. He remained in Virginia for a few years after the Revolutionary War and perhaps he died there.

Alexander II, along with his brother-in-laws William & Andrew Cowan witnessed the will of their father-in-law, John Walker, in Washington County, Virginia on 25 Sep. 1778. This will was proved in Washington County on 17 Dec. 1778 by oaths of Alexander Montgomery and William Cowan, Witnesses there to.

After the Revolution, the family remained in Virginia for some time. No record has been found of disposition of the land of Alexander II. His son, John Montgomery stated in his application for Revolutionary pension that, after the war was over, he returned to his father’s home in Virginia, where he remained for some time. Therefore, we assume Alexander II, remained in Virginia for a few years after the Revolutionary War, and perhaps he died there. It is not known when or where Alexander Montgomery II, and his wife, Mathera (Walker) Montgomery died.

One Alexander Montgomery served on a jury in Russell County, Virginia in Sep 1790 in the case of Champ Faris vs. Richard Davis. After this there was no record of an Alexander Montgomery in Russell County until the 1797Tax List; it is thought this was Alexander III. It is probable the family went to

Tennessee about 1791. John Montgomery, Jr. grandson of Alexander II, was born in Tennessee in 1792.

The Children of Alexander Montgomery II, and Martha Walker:

1. Alexander Montgomery III, was born 1 Feb. 1762, in Orange Co. North Carolina, He married Mary Elizabeth Johnson in a fort on French Broad River possibly in Tennessee.

2. John Montgomery was born 5 Aug. 1764, in Orange Co. North Carolina. He married (1) Susannah Elizabeth Porter, his first cousin, on 5 Aug. 1785. She died on 30 Nov. 1802. He married (2) Elizabeth Harris on 20 Nov 1804. She was born about 1770 and died 14 Sept.1846.

3. Michael Montgomery was born in 1765 in Virginia. It is not known whom he married, when or where. He died, intestate, before October 1836 at which time an estate was opened for him in Parke County, Indiana.

4. Philip Montgomery, born about 1767, married Margery McClintock on 25 Nov 1814, in Floyd Co. Kentucky. Tradition says that Philip and Joseph Montgomery were brothers of James and William Montgomery. It was also reported that Philip fought in the Revolution, but it seems more likely it

was the War of 1812 (?).

5. Joseph Montgomery was born about 1770 in Virginia. Tradition says that Joseph was in an Indian skirmish. The story goes that he and some comrades had been on a river and were trying to reach a fort on the bank. While running from the river to the fort, one of the comrades was wounded, and Joseph stopped to help him and he was himself wounded in the hip, however, they

both managed to reach the fort.

6. James Montgomery, born about 1773 in Virginia, married Elizabeth Gibson in

1794.

7. William Montgomery, born 10 Dec 1779 in Amherst, Virginia married Sarah Gibson abt 1800 and died 21 Oct 1856 Union City, Hendricks, Indiana, USA

NOTES

  • Alexander’s mother reportedly died in 1738 so a mistake was made on his date of birth or possible different mother.
  • Robert Cicero Montgomery is in dispute.

Don’t shoot the messenger.
